‘Country’s defence policy conforms to national aspirations’

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s defence policy is based on peaceful co-existence in conformity with the prevailing geo-strategic environment and national aspirations, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said on Monday.
He was talking to Naval Chief Admiral Afzal Tahir who called on the prime minister before his retirement due early next month.
Gilani, lauding the distinguished career of Admiral Tahir that spanned over a period of 41 years, said his services would be remembered for a long time. He said during his tenure as the naval chief, Tahir had introduced various initiatives, making the navy fully capable of defending the country’s maritime security.
Gilani said the Pakistan Navy was important as it contributed significantly to protecting the sea-lanes and routes of the country, adding that Admiral Tahir’s role in the regard could not be ignored.
